How to raise millions of free-range chickens to produce eggs and meat
Free range refers to a livestock farming method in which animals are free to roam outdoors for at least part of the day, rather than being confined to pens 24 hours a day.
Free range may apply to meat, egg or dairy farming.
About 98 percent of egg-raised chickens live on factory farms with no access to the outdoors at all.
Most hens spend their entire lives in small cages with a few other birds, each assigned a space the size of an iPad to live in. Less than 2% of hens are raised on free-range farms, as we can see in the video.
